Some of the big car insurers such as Norwich Union try and provide competitive rates for all drivers, but others ) have more specialised marketing policies. Some concentrate on mature drivers, others young drivers and others lady drivers.
These more specialist insurers develop because they want to appeal to specific sots of drivers and in doing so they become more experienced at working out the risks within their chosen market. Consequently they can offer better rates.
It is a fact that until the age of around 55, lady drivers represent a lower risk to the insurer than a man of equal age and driving experience. Over the age of 55, their record tends to be worse than a man of the same age!
This is not to say that younger ladies don't have any accidents! They do, and around the same number as men. But on average the accidents are less serious. This in turn means that until 55, ladies represent a lower financial risk to the insurers.
Why is this? Research shows that women tend to drive differently to men. They take fewer risks, drive less fast, drive less on motorways and are less likely to be showing off to their friends with fancy driving manoeuvres! But when they get older they become less confident and this seems to affect their judgement and their control of the car.
To get the best possible quote lady drivers should try a few ‘woman only' insurers as well as some general car insurance providers or brokers.
